The Empty Hours / Aug 15 & 16
August 1, 2014 - August 16, 2014
August 5, 16,
On the isolated coast of Veracruz, 17 year-old Sebastian takes over running his uncle’s small and cozy rent-by-the hour motel. There he meets Miranda, a regular customer who comes to the motel to meet a lover who always keeps her waiting. As Sebastian and Miranda get to know each other, an ambiguous game of seduction begins between them. (101 minutes)
This second feature by the Mexican director Aaron Fernandez is a delight. Washed in the colors of surf and sand, and moving to the languid rhythms of swaying palm trees, The Empty Hours is a vacation from the noise and bombast of the summer blockbuster. This is a film that’s less about sex than about how it feels in life’s spaces, when we’re simply waiting — for a lover to arrive, an uncle to return or the summer to be over. Sebastian and Miranda are killing time, but so softly that watching a beetle transport a bottle top over a tile floor feels as riveting as any car chase. –The New York Times
