 A self-diagnosed nymphomaniac recounts the erotic adventures of her life and her journey of self-discovery. Charlotte Gainsbourg, Christian Slater, Shia LaBeouf,  Stellan Skarsgard, Uma Thurman and Willem Dafoe star in Lars von Trier’s two-part epic about gender roles, authoritarianism, religion, obsessive behavior, and lust. Danish filmmaker/provocateur Lars von Triers is perhaps best known for Dancer in the Dark, which starred Bjork and won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Nymphomaniac: Volume I and Volume II mark Lars von Trier’s follow-up to his critically acclaimed film, Melancholia. As widely reported, the films contain graphic depictions of sexuality to a degree unprecedented in a mainstream feature film.

“American studios,” Von Triers says, “give money to directors to educate them away from their creative fingerprint, even if that’s the reason they wanted them in the first place. I’ve avoided that fate. You have to fight the urge to do a big action movie. You avoid Batman.”
