The past, present and future of art collide beautifully in Russian master Alexander Sokurov’s new film, a fascinating portrait of real-life characters Jacques Jaujard and Count Franziskus Wolff-Metternich — two remarkable men who started out as enemies and then became collaborators during the Nazi Occupation of Paris. Their alliance would become the driving force behind the preservation of irreplaceable artworks and treasures at the Louvre.

The film’s theme is the nature of museums themselves: what they tell us about our grasp of time, their historical function in empire-building, the way in which they foster the harvesting and hoarding of culture, and how those very acts alter our understanding of power, both personal and political.

Francofonia is a stunning and urgently relevant meditation on the essential relationship between art, culture, and history.

German, French and Russian with subtitles / 87 min
