A group of research scientists has been sent to a distant planet where reading and writing have been banned. This visionary Russian science fiction film is an adaptation of a book by the Strugatski brothers, on whose work Tarkovsky’s Stalker was based. Twelve years in the making — six of which were for the actual shooting — Hard To Be A God is hardcore art-house cinema and not for the impatient or squeamish, but, if you stick with it, the images and performances will haunt you long after the screen turns dark. Directed by the late Aleksei German. (2015; 170 min)
♦ Aleksei German’s final masterpiece is choreographed with a Felliniesque social grandeur. –Slant
♦ Mr. German was just as stubborn in sticking to his personal vision as he was innovative in his storytelling, and he’s left behind a final opus that is hard to shake.–The NY Times
♦ A MASTERPIECE. — The Village Voice
♦ Visionary cinema of truly loopy, uncompromised grandeur. –Indiewire
