British filmmaker Peter Strickland follows his eerie Festival hit, Berberian Sound Studio (which some of you saw here last year), with this beguiling melodrama about an amateur butterfly expert whose wayward desires test her lover’s patience. The Duke of Burgundy has been compared to Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour and Joseph Losey’s The Servant. (2015; 104 min)
♦ The Duke of Burgundy is a love story, and also a perversely sincere (and sincerely perverse) labor of love. –The NY Times
♦ I have not seen the film Fifty Shades of Grey but I doubt that it evokes the mystery, wit, and eroticism that Peter Strickland’s fable of women in love does. All without nudity, bad dialogue, or the requisite wooden acting. -The Boston Globe
♦ This is one of the most incisive, penetrating, and empathetic films ever made about what it truly means to love another person, audaciously disguised as salacious midnight-movie fare. No better picture is likely to surface all year.–The A.V. Club
