In Germany in 1788, a rebellious poet and two bohemian sisters experience an unforgettable period which will eventually bind them forever.

Beloved Sisters is loosely based on the relationship between the post-Enlightenment writer and philosopher Friedrich Schiller and the sisters Charlotte von Lengefeld (who would become his wife) and Caroline von Beulwitz (his eventual biographer).  (170 min; in German and French w/ subtitles)

“The result is immersive and intelligent. Graf’s knack for no-nonsense storytelling means that Beloved Sisters seems to fly past. Each detail and observation—whether it’s about the Romantic mindset, gender roles, or fame in the pre-celebrity age—is integrated so seamlessly that the movie feels effortless. Which, of course, it isn’t; the sort of fleet, sure-footed filmmaking practiced by Graf takes a great deal of serious smarts.” The A.V. Club

“Although there’s nothing sensationalistic about his approach, [Graf] treats the characters’  bohemianism as a wild, brave, and precious thing, and the lead actors — restrained where it counts and bold where it matters — are a pleasure to watch.” The Village Voice

“As lengthy and passionate as a drawn-out kiss, Beloved Sisters is a beautifully made romantic drama set in 18th century Germany that’s smart, sensual and emotionally resonant.” L.A. Times

“THE BEST NEW MOVIE OUT THIS WEEKEND! There have been several wonderful movies focusing on a ménage à trois—Jules and Jim, Get Out Your Handkerchiefs, Y Tu Mamá También—but they’ve all centered on two men sharing the same woman. This gets flipped in Beloved Sisters, a zippily engrossing eighteenth-century costume drama based on a little known true story. Beautifully shot and acted, Beloved Sisters both explores the tricky nature of sisterhood and shows us how Charlotte, Caroline, and Schiller’s scandalous search for personal freedom in love mirrors the larger search for political freedom during the Enlightenment and French Revolution. Beloved Sisters conjures a time and place in which having a ménage à trois could be, believe it or not, a form of idealism.” Vogue
